Latinas have emerged in the entertainment industry since the
1920’s. Actresses such as Dolores Del Rio paved the way for Latinas in
Hollywood.
However, at that point in Hollywood history Latinas were limited to
certain roles or characters such as being mysterious, sultry, and guided by
their emotions.
As time has passed we have seen an increase of Latinas in
Hollywood, some of who include Salma Hayek, Eva Mendez, Jennifer Lopez and
Sofia Vergara.
The range of characters portrayed by Latinas have also expanded
significantly, and the Latino audience has progressively grown in Hollywood as
well.
Latina’s are no longer being displayed as JUST the maids, or the exotic
women on the big screen; those days are becoming history.
An uprising Latina actress has made her way to the
entertainment industry who shows a promising future.
Suveria Mota, born in the
Dominican Republic, moved to New York City at the age of four along with her
family. Suveria started getting involved in dancing, and acting as early as
early as elementary school.
She pursued a degree in Speech Pathology and
Audiology at Lehman College, but as soon as she graduated she went on to pursue
her long life dream: to become an actress in Hollywood.
Just a few months later
she joined SAG-AFTRA, an American labor union that represents over 105,000 film
and television principal and performers worldwide.
She has featured in various
shows such as “Glee,” and is currently filming various movies such as "Wolf on the Moon" and "Nocturnal Reflections."
Latina actresses have faced various stereotypes and
obstacles to emerge in the entertainment industry, but actresses such as
Suviera are continuing to pave the way to improve the outlook on Latina
actresses.
She is pursuing her dream, and is not letting the stereotypes or the
limited roles stop her from empowering herself as a LATINA actress in
Hollywood.
I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of this Dominican beauty in the near
future.
